The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Gunnery Sergeant James Carter Guseman (MCSN: 247932), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Regimental Weapons Company, Twenty-Fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 17 June 1944. Realizing that a dangerous gap had been created in the infantry line by bitter enemy machine-gun and artillery fire, Gunnery Sergeant Guseman immediately moved his 37-mm. platoon forward to fill the weakened position until help could arrive in the threatened area. When he discovered that a Japanese fieldpiece was retarding the advance of a nearby regiment, he courageously maneuvered one of his guns into direct line of fire from the hostile weapon and, skillfully aiming at point-blank range, destroyed the Japanese gun and thereby secured the advance of the regiment. Gunnery Sergeant Guseman’s indomitable fighting spirit and resolute devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
