The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Judson C. Grey (MCSN: 491218), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company G, Second Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 9 July 1944. Sighting a wounded Marine lying in an exposed area during a bitter engagement with the Japanese, Private First Class Grey fearlessly braved the enemy’s concentrated machine-gun and rifle fire to attempt a rescue and, while carrying out his perilous mission was himself seriously wounded by a bursting Japanese shell. By his daring initiative, great personal valor and grave concern for the safety of another at great risk to his life, Private First Class Grey upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
