The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James D. Feltman (MCSN: 274316), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as an Intelligence Scout serving with the THIRD Marine Division during the landing attack at Cape Torokina, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on November 1, 194. Proceeding alone under intense enemy fire to a Japanese position, Sergeant Feltman conducted a daring reconnaissance, gaining valuable knowledge of the hostile emplacements and destroying several enemy soldiers whom he encountered during the hazardous mission. After reporting his information, he organized a combat team of men separated from their units and heroically led them in vigorous attacks, destroying two Japanese bunker positions which had been inflicting heavy casualties upon our assault troops. Sergeant Feltman’s initiative, cool courage and valiant devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
