The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Carl D. Evans (MCSN: 812588), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Leader of a Machine Gun Section of company K, Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 20 June 1945. Voluntarily going to the aid of two wounded members of his platoon, Corporal Evans made his way to an exposed reef and despite accurate sniper fire succeeded in carrying the more seriously wounded man to safety. In addition, he further exposed himself to enemy fire in order to draw the enemy’s attention away from the second wounded man, thereby making it possible for him to make his way to safety. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
