The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George C. Davies (MCSN: 376972), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters and Service Battery, Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 7 July 1944. During a heavy hostile attack on his battery’s position, Sergeant Davies bravely carried machine guns and ammunition to isolated units which were under heavy enemy machine-gun fire and, after his officers had been killed in the action, skillfully directed the fire of his men against the Japanese troops who were enveloping his right flank. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
