The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] William B. Williams, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 June 1944 at Normandy, France. Captain Williams skillfully directed his boat through a hail of small arms, mortar and artillery fire to the high ground on the beach. He charged an enemy gun position along and although thrown back and wounded by enemy grenades, his grenades found their mark and destroyed the enemy position. Captain Williams’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 29th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
