Walker (ASN: 0-338170), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 349th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Sasseleone, Italy on 9 October 1944. While participating in a night attack, First Lieutenant Walker jumped into an enemy gun emplacement that had been holding up the advance, killing the gunner and kicking over the machine gun while firing, and captured two others. The gallantry of First Lieutenant Walker in leading his men in the face of heavy direct fire, was the decisive fact in the success of the action. First Lieutenant Walker’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 88th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
