The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Brigadier General Leif J. Sverdrup, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Director of Construction, Southwest Pacific Area, in action against enemy forces at Lingayen, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 January 1945. Landing with the first wave of assault troops and with complete disregard for his own safety, he proceeded immediately to render invaluable assistance in the seizure of the vital Lingayen airfield. General Sverdrup’s exceptional courage, initiative determination contributed immeasurably to the success accomplishment of the mission and exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States.
