During the attack on Mount Croce, First Lieutenant Summers led his platoon up the steep hill under a heavy enemy mortar barrage and machine gun fire. He had been ordered, when he reached the crest, to contact the left flank of another battalion and join with them in a coordinated move across the entire hill. Instead of American troops, however, he came upon a German machine gun nest manned by three of the enemy, each with an automatic weapon. The machine gun emplacement was surrounded by a thick stone wall, about three and a half feet high. This machine gun nest had prevented the other infantrymen from coming across the open ground to join the attack. First Lieutenant Summers decided that the German position could be taken only by a swift, daring thrust that would completely surprise the enemy. He selected two enlisted men to accompany him and, using every available means of concealment, the three soldiers crawled forward to within 30 yards of the position without being seen. First Lieutenant Summers raced to the stone wall, jumped inside the nest, and, at the point of his Tommy Gun, forced the Germans to surrender. A machine gun from another position opened fire on the two enlisted men as they advanced, killing one of the men and wounding the other. First Lieutenant Summers’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
