(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Paul R. Sowa, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, in 1944. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Paul R. Sowa, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 20 February 1945. When a member of the Infantry company to which he was attached as a Medical Aid man was seriously wounded by enemy fire, Corporal Sowa immediately started to the rescue. The injured man lay in a street completely exposed to hostile fire. Undaunted by this danger, Corporal Sowa reached the casualty’s side, administered immediate first aid, and successfully carried him fifty yards to a position of safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
