Technical Sergeant Scabery successfully crossed the Roer River and established a bridgehead in a factory. Later, realizing that it would be impossible to cross the stream in force, Technical Sergeant Scabery with one volunteer and 8 prisoners re-crossed the river. He then reported to the battalion commander, informing him that it was possible to cross in boats at the site where he did, and volunteered to shuttle the men over. Technical Sergeant Scabery’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 8th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
