(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Medical Corps) Edward John Hackett (ASN: 0-1692285), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Medical Officer with the 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 7th Armored Division, on 13 September 1944, in France. On many occasions Captain Hackett went forward under enemy fire to aid wounded and evacuate. On 13 September, in the woods near Malmaison, France, he went to forward in a dense wood and beyond the assault line of our troops to within 10 or 15 yards of where the enemy was dug in to determine the condition of a man already believe to be dead. Despite the caution of his troop commander not to do so he went forth unhesitatingly to determine the condition of the casualty and remained there alone even after being fired on by the enemy, and in so doing sacrificed his life. Captain Hackett’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
