The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Edward F. Eyerman, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division at Los Negros Island in the Admiralty Group, on 14 March 1944. When his machine gun crew reached the top of Hill 260, they were met with a hail of enemy fire. They set up their machine gun, being the most advanced machine gun of the line. After two other men were hit, Private Eyerman was knocked unconscious by a bullet that hit his helmet. After he regained consciousness, Private Eyerman, with the help of two other men, managed to drag the gun to a new spot where they set it up and opened fire. The new emplacement drew withering fire from the enemy. He continued to man the gun for five hours until he was wounded by a bullet that struck between his lung and his heart. Private Eyerman’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
