The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Richard E. Deland (ASN: 6144411), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 25 April 1943, in the vicinity of Mateur, Tunisia, North Africa, Sergeant Deland displayed extraordinary heroism and great skill in voluntarily, alone, and armed only with an ’03 rifle, in attacking and silencing a German Machine gun nest. This act was performed under constant sniper a machine gun fire from close range. Sergeant Deland secured valuable information of enemy positions at a high personal risk of life. His act instilled confidence in his fellow soldiers and materially aided our forces. The personal bravery and courageous leadership displayed by Staff Sergeant Deland reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
