The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] Edward J. Lashway (ASN: 31467544), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 21 February 1945 in Germany. Near Halsdorf, Germany, Staff Sergeant Lashway exposed himself to an intense hostile cross fire to locate enemy guns delaying his company. Then, displaying courage and outstanding leadership, he quickly deployed his platoon and led an attack, despite the danger, which destroyed the enemy installations. Staff Sergeant Lashway’s leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
