The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Harold E. Yingst (ASN: 13159005), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 3 April 1945 in Germany. Technician Fifth Grade Yingst, acting as radio operator of a forward observer party, maintained constant communication with supporting artillery under heavy concentrations of German rifle, mortar and artillery fire. At great personal risk, and despite orders to withdraw, he persisted in his exposed position to aid in the observation of fire upon the enemy. Technician Fifth Grade Yingst’s inspiring and heroic devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
