The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant [then Sergeant] Eugene T. Refice (ASN: 33347917), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 4 October 1944 in France. Near Lixieres, France, First Sergeant Refice, a communications sergeant, crawled through severe hostile fire to within thirty yards of a pillbox. After his fire caused the enemy to close the apertures, he again exposed himself, to administer aid to four seriously wounded comrades. Following evacuation of the casualties, he forced the occupants of the emplacement to surrender. First Sergeant Refice’s courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
