The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Orland Hyde (ASN: 6272034), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 8 February 1945 in Germany. During the night of 8 February 1945, the company in which Private First Class Hyde served as platoon runner was engaged in the assault across the Our River into Germany and the Siegfried Line near Wallendorf, Germany. After carrying supplies through intense artillery fire from the crossing area up the steep slopes to the company and carrying casualties down to the assault boats, Private First Class Hyde was assigned a patrol mission into enemy territory. Working his way well into enemy lines, Private First Class Hyde crawled stealthily upon three Germans who were digging an emplacement. Covered by his two companions, he captured the three men who, when interrogated at headquarters, revealed valuable information. Private First Class Hyde’s courage, diligence, and sincere devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
