The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Bernard L. Broadway (ASN: 34311528), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 2 October 1944 in France. When his platoon, upon capturing prisoners, was suddenly and heavily fired upon by an enemy machine gun, wounding the platoon leader and platoon sergeant, Sergeant Broadway immediately assumed command and successfully routed the enemy. Although himself wounded in this action, his unfailing confidence inspired his men to carry on despite the intense hazards involved. His courageous leadership and bravery are commensurate with the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
