The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Staff Sergeant] Bernard D. Fahey (ASN: 0-2025641), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 756th Tank Battalion, 3d Infantry Division. On 4 May 1945, at about 1200, near Otterloh, Germany, Second Lieutenant Fahey, realizing that the safety of the most advanced element of a task force was in danger of being destroyed by a battery of 170-mm. guns firing direct fire at a range of 500 yards, attacked the battery with his light tank. He moved toward the woods with all the enemy fire concentrated on his tank, exposing the upper half of his body to the enemy fire to spray the area with his anti-aircraft machine gun. By his swift and courageous action, he forced the enemy to abandon their guns, killed more than twenty of the enemy, and brought about the eventual capture of seventy-five prisoners. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
