The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain David Brian Grant (AFSN: 0-14933790), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4E Aircraft Commander over Southeast Asia on 1 May 1972. On that date, Captain Grant was diverted from another strike to attack a surface-to-air missile site deep in hostile territory. Despite a heavy barrage of anti-aircraft fire and several surface-to-air missiles being launched at the flight Captain Grant was able to attack and destroy two surface-to-air missiles and their associated launch equipment. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Grant reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Captain Grant attacked a hostile aircraft interceptor and forced the interceptor to disengage an attack on his flight lead. Despite extremely heavy and accurate anti-aircraft fire and surface-to-air missiles, Captain Grant, with complete disregard for his personal safety, effectively neutralized the attack. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Grant reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
