The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Gale Albert Despiegler (AFSN: FR-3110032), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4E Weapon Systems Officer on 8 January 1972. On that date, Major Despiegler conducted an air strike against a heavily defended truck park and supply storage area. Despite intense anti-aircraft fire and marginal weather conditions, Major Despiegler delivered his ordnance on target destroying two trucks and numerous supplies thus denying their use by hostile forces. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Despiegler reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
