The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Louis James Rochat, III, United States Army, for gallantry while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Troop E, 1st Squadron (Airmobile), 9th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Rochat distinguished himself by valorous actions on 18 January 1971, while serving in the Republic of Vietnam. When his aircraft came under intense enemy fire while flying cover for a downed helicopter, Warrant Officer Rochat displayed professionalism and courage in the performance of his duties. While on station, Warrant Officer Rochat picked up enemy movement and marked the area for air-strikes. Disregarding his own safety, Warrant Officer Rochat continued to mark the enemy positions until he was severely wounded and his aircraft shot down. His gallant actions and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
