The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Kent H. Hillhouse (ASN: 0-5714479), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Hillhouse distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 6 January 1968, while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company H, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, during a reconnaissance in force mission southwest of Loc Ninh. When the armored column came under intense hostile fire from well fortified bunkers, Lieutenant Hillhouse immediately had his tank overrun a bunker to relieve pressure on the lead vehicle. While clearing a path for an armored flamethrower vehicle, Lieutenant Hillhouse’s tank was suddenly taken under heavy fire at point plank range. He courageously silenced the enemy force with his own personal weapon, enabling the flamethrower vehicle to get through and eliminate fortified positions. After an air strike, Lieutenant Hillhouse further disregarded his personal safety to lead his platoon in a sweep of the area to rout any remaining enemy soldiers. First Lieutenant Hillhouse’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a Viet Cong force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
