The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General Woodrow A. Abbott (ASN: 0-1307490), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States. General Abbott distinguished himself as Inspector General, Headquarters Strategic Air Command, from 4 September 1971 to 17 February 1973, and as Director of Intelligence and as Inspector General, United States Readiness Command, from 22 February 1973 to 31 May 1974. The astute leadership and dedicated service displayed by General Abbott have resulted in increased effectiveness of the Strategic Air Command’s intercontinental ballistic missile and bomber forces, providing a viable mainstay in the defense effort of this country. His ability to focus intelligence resources on rapidly changing situations has substantially improved the posture of credible reinforcements within the United States Readiness Command. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Abbott culminate a long and distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
