The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Dewey C. Thomas (ASN: 34375828), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company A, 18th Tank Battalion, 8th Armored Division, in Germany on 28 March 1945. When the tank in which he was serving as a gunner suffered a direct hit the platoon leader was severely wounded. Private Thomas immediately moved up to the turret and removed the wounded officer. Under direct fire from the enemy within sixty yards range, he moved the wounded officer to the security of a ditch some fifteen yards away. There under a constant hail of small arms fire, he rendered first aid and remained with him until medical aid arrived. His courage and devotion to duty reflect great credit to himself and the Armed forces of the United states.
