The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class James B. Sones (ASN: 6290214), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company F, 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 18 January 1944. As the Lead Scout in a combat patrol, Private First Class Sones sighted the enemy, gave the proper signals, and shot the leading Japanese. In the fierce engagement which followed he occupied an important defense position on the patrol’s flank from which the enemy attempted to dislodge him with automatic fire and grenades. Private First Class Sones was wounded but courageously and steadfastly remained at his post and successfully prevented the enemy from rolling back the flank until the seriousness of his wounds necessitated evacuation. On 23 January 1944, he succumbed to the wounds received in this action. Private First Class Sones’ gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
