The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert E. Daugherty (ASN: 15105714), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company **, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. On ** April 1943, at Djebel ******, Tunisia, Private First Class Daugherty, from a forward heavy machine gun outpost, gallantly held his position and manned his gun after all riflemen for his protection in this vicinity became casualties from heavy enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire. The proximity of the enemy was such that hand grenades were thrown on his position. In spite of the danger, Private Daugherty remained at his gun and delivered such a heavy volume of fire that the enemy counterattack was repulsed in that sector. His bravery, devotion to duty, and utter disregard for personal safety was an inspiration to the entire command. Private First Class Daugherty’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
