The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private George S. Caswell, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 476th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, 41st Infantry Division, in action near Soriari Village, Biak Island, on 28 May 1944. When a comrade was wounded while engaged in defense against enemy infiltration, Private Caswell, without regard for his own safety, left the protection of his own gun revetment to administer first aid. In the company with another soldier he made three trips across an area exposed to enemy fire in order to care for this wounded man. Private Caswell’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
