The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Coast Artillery Corps) Augustine S. Apra (ASN: 0-360950), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 60th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti Aircraft), in action at Corregidor, Philippine Islands, from 11 April to 6 May 1942. While in command of a machine gun platoon furnishing local protection to a gun battery which was a frequent target of Japanese artillery and aerial bombardment, Lieutenant Apra displayed conspicuous courage and devotion to duty despite the most difficult conditions. On one occasion when the fire control and communication counters were destroyed during the enemy air attack, he unhesitatingly went to the aid of the wounded men and, despite continued enemy artillery fire, extricated the men from the bombed position. By his sustained courage, outstanding leadership, and unwavering determination, Lieutenant Apra provided an inspiring example during the heroic defense of Corregidor. First Lieutenant Apra’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
