The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Sergeant Vincent J. Aloe (ASN: 36709411), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action in Germany, on 17 April 1945. When Sergeant Aloe’s company was pinned down by enemy fire while moving through an enemy town, they immediately called for a tank. As the tank moved forward, Sergeant Aloe and his comrades observed an enemy rocket launcher team preparing to knock it out from a nearby cellar. They quickly moved to the rear of the building in which the enemy was concealed and opened fire. As the enemy rushed from the cellar to escape, Sergeant Aloe and his comrades killed them with grenades. Sergeant Aloe’s alertness and unhesitating action enabled the tank to knock out the enemy position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Aloe, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
