The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Robert N. Clark, Jr. (MCSN: 0-93883), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Platoon Commander of the First Platoon, Company D, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 March 1967. During Operation PRAIRIE II in Quang Tri Province, Second Lieutenant Clark’s platoon was the lead element during a company size search and clear operation. As the unit moved along a restricted trail through thick undergrowth, it was halted by the explosion of a command detonated mine. Almost immediately, the platoon came under heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire from a North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong force in well-concealed ambush positions. As the hostile fire increased in volume, Second Lieutenant Clark courageously moved forward to rally his men. While shouting words of encouragement, he skillfully regrouped his platoon and led the assault against the enemy, forcing them to withdraw from their positions. With complete disregard for his own safety, he continued to move among his men, directing their fire and inspiring them by his bold fighting spirit until he fell mortally wounded. His courageous actions and unwavering determination enabled his men to continue their aggressive attack, destroying the remaining enemy positions and inflicting numerous casualties. By his extraordinary courage, superb leadership and selfless devotion to duty, Second Lieutenant Clark upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
