The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Jeffrey M. Barron (MCSN: 2296415), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company G, Third Battalion, Twelfth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. In the early morning hours of 25 February 1969, Battery G was occupying a position at Fire Support Base Neville near the Rockpile in Quang Tri Province when the base came under intense mortar and rocket fire supporting a fierce ground assault by a large North Vietnamese Army force which subsequently penetrated the friendly perimeter. Reacting instantly, Corporal Barron manned a fighting position and commenced firing at the advancing enemy. Although painfully wounded, he directed his section to advantageous firing positions and fearlessly maneuvered back to the emplacement to ensure the security of his howitzer. Undaunted by a second severe wound, Corporal Barron moved from one position to another, encouraging his men and directing their fire against the enemy. When a hand grenade impacted nearby, wounding him for the third time and rendering him immobile, he remained calm and continued to supervise the actions of his men until he succumbed to his wounds. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Barron inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
