The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Thomas Milton Spaulding (ASN: 34825527), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Battery A, 574th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Self Propelled) (Separate), attached to the 13th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 12 April 1945. When his convoy was ambushed by a large enemy force near Urbach, Germany, Corporal Spaulding unselfishly exposed himself to intense hostile fire and rescued two wounded comrades. With utter disregard for his own safety he assisted in the capture of four heavily armed enemy paratroopers, moved an M-16 Half Track to give it a field of fire, and in full view of the enemy reloaded and manned its four machine guns. Corporal Spaulding’s courageous actions and indomitable fighting spirit are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service.
