The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Frederick Joseph Giroux (ASN: 0-1293876), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 2d Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 9 October 1944. On that date, during action near Ananvillers, France, Lieutenant Giroux fearlessly exposed himself to intense enemy small arms, machine gun, mortar and artillery fire to rescue a number of wounded men. With utter disregard for his own safety he courageously made two lone trips forward in the face of the withering enemy fire and removed a number of wounded men to safety. Inspired by his heroic actions, two other men volunteered to assist in the rescue and returned with a seriously wounded comrade. Second Lieutenant Giroux’s indomitable courage and unselfish devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
