The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Francis Hill Dohs (ASN: 0-18233), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters, 301st Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany. During the period from 19 to 24 February 1945, Colonel Dohs led his battalion in a fierce assault against Freudenburg, Germany, inspiring his men by his bold, fearless example. He constantly exposed himself to intense fire, encouraging and directing his men. Through his courageous leadership his battalion made the hazardous crossing of the Saar River in record time, making possible the establishment of a vital bridgehead on the far side and the capture of Serrig. Colonel Dohs was killed by a direct artillery hit during the crossing operations, but his supreme devotion to duty, in keeping with the finest traditions of the service, lives on as a constant inspiration to his men.
