The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to Vice Admiral John Augustine Tyree, Jr. (NSN: 0-72361), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States as Deputy Chief of Staff and subsequently as Chief of Staff, Headquarters, United States European command (HQ USEUCOM), during the period April 1966 to January 1970. While serving in these important assignments, Vice Admiral Tyree demonstrated forceful leadership and outstanding dedication in carrying out his many responsibilities. His professional competence and determined efforts were key factors in successfully relocating HQ USEUCOM from Paris, France, to Stuttgart, Germany; in providing essential guidance on innumerable projects and studies for USEUCOM in support of assigned missions; and in maintaining a high degree of liaison between staff and component echelons, which has greatly enhanced understanding of command policies vital to the Unified Command and of great significance to the United States. Throughout his tour of duty, Vice Admiral Tyree exhibited a unique ability to produce exceptional results in all tasks despite difficult conditions, including complex political and military interrelationships. His astute judgment, personal leadership, resolute determination, and unswerving loyalty, and unusually keen understanding of political, economic, and military factors, directly furthered the security interests of the United States, significantly enhanced the military posture of the European Command, and produced results which reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
