The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Commander [then Lieutenant Commander] Hepburn Alcott Pearce (NSN: 0-70045), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. EDISON (DD-439), during amphibious operations in the Gulf of Salerno, Italy, on 9 and 10 September 1943. Courageously fighting his ship close inshore in enemy mined and unswept waters in the face of repeated attacks from hostile aircraft and shore batteries, Commander Pearce provided excellent gunfire support for the assault waves of landing craft and our troops on the beaches, inflicting severe, extensive damage on the enemy. By his expert seamanship and indomitable fighting spirit, maintained under extremely hazardous combat conditions, Commander Pearce contributed in large measure to the success of the invasion of the mainland of Italy.
