The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant [then Lieutenant, Junior Grade] Ernest James Lawton, Jr. (NSN: 0-240589), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Pilot of a Torpedo Bomber in Night Torpedo Squadron NINETY (VT(N)-90), attached to the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE (CV-6), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Japanese Inland Sea, on 19 March 1945. After locating a large enemy carrier and battleship by radar, Lieutenant Lawton made low-level attacks on the hostile warships despite the extreme danger of encountering intense anti-aircraft fire and inflicted probable serious damage. His airmanship, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
