The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunner’s Mate Second Class George F. Lambert, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a member of the crew of the Armed Guard aboard a merchant vessel during the aerial dive-bombing and sinking of that vessel by enemy forces during World War II. Standing by his battle station throughout hostile raids upon the convoy and escorting warships, Gunner’s Mate Second Class Lambert contributed to the destruction of a low-flying bomber which crashed to the sea in flames. Courageously remaining aboard to expedite abandonment of the rapidly sinking vessel, he was one of the last men to go over the side. By his heroic conduct and conscientious devotion to duty, Gunner’s Mate Second Class Lambert rendered valuable aid to his commanding officer and contributed to the maintenance of timely and effective fire against a persistent foe. His gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
