The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Carl Allen Brown, Jr. (NSN: 0-114255), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as a carrier-based fighter pilot in Fighting Squadron TWENTY-SEVEN (VF-27), on 21 September 1944. As leader of a division which accounted for ten enemy aircraft, he personally accounted for two enemy aircraft. He repeatedly employed his section in driving off enemy fighters in advantageous positions during the general melee and by so doing materially contributed to the thirty-eight to zero score achieved by his squadron. His courage and disregard of his own safety were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
