The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Carl Allen Brown, Jr. (NSN: 0-114255), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as a carrier-based fighter pilot in Fighting Squadron TWENTY-SEVEN (VF-27), on 21 September 1944. As leader of a division which accounted for ten enemy aircraft, he personally accounted for two enemy aircraft. He repeatedly employed his section in driving off enemy fighters in advantageous positions during the general melee and by so doing materially contributed to the thirty-eight to zero score achieved by his squadron. His courage and disregard of his own safety were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Carl Allen Brown, Jr. (NSN: 0-114255), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Fighter Plane in Fighting Squadron TWENTY-SEVEN (VF-27), attached to the U.S.S. PRINCETON (CVL-24), in action against enemy Japanese Forces during the Battle for Leyte Gulf, 24 October 1944. Skilled and aggressive in combat, Lieutenant Commander Brown participated in the interception of a large group of enemy planes attempting to attack our Task Force and pressed home his attack to shoot down five enemy planes and to inflict severe damage on an other. His high combat efficiency, courage and devotion to duty were instrumental in preventing damage to our ships and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Carl Allen Brown, Jr. (NSN: 0-114255), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights as a Fighter Pilot in Fighting Squadron TWENTY-SEVEN (VF-27), during the operations against the enemy-held Mariana Islands from 11 June to 19 June 1944. By shooting down two enemy planes and by damaging enemy gun positions and other military installations, he contributed greatly to the success of the operations. As a division leader, his airmanship and leadership proved invaluable on numerous missions. His coolness, skill and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
