The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Robert McCumber Barnes (NSN: 0-101379), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights in the Pacific Area during the period from 10 March 1945 to 13 June 1945. Lieutenant Barnes completed twenty flights in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Robert McCumber Barnes (NSN: 0-101379), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight off the coast of Japan on 17 June 1945. As Patrol Plane Commander of one of two Navy Patrol Bombers attacked by a flight of twelve enemy fighter aircraft he made an essential contribution to the destruction of three and the possible destruction of five more enemy aircraft. His skill and tactical coordination were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Robert McCumber Barnes (NSN: 0-101379), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Commander of a Navy Patrol Plane in Patrol-Bombing Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWO (VPB-102), in action against enemy forces on Japanese-held Marcus Island on 9 May 1945. Flying through extremely hazardous weather to participate in a strike against this enemy stronghold, Lieutenant Barnes braved intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire from enemy gun emplacements and rifle fire which riddled his plane to press home his attack at a minimum altitude. Gallantly fighting his plane, he assisted in the destruction of two grounded enemy planes, strafed and bombed enemy installations with highly damaging results and inflicted severe casualties on hostile troops. His skilled airmanship, indomitable fighting spirit and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
