The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Medical Inspector Maurice Wissemans, French Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. When the 1st American Division went into the Verdun sector for training purposes, he collaborated with the Medical Service of the American Expeditionary Forces in every possible way to the end that our battle casualties should receive proper care. Later, as Chief Surgeon of the Group of Armies of the East, he actively participated in the preparation of the plans for the St. Mihiel and the Argonne offensives. His wide experience in battle conditions and his whole-hearted desire to be of assistance to his country’s allies enabled him to render services of great value to the American Expeditionary Forces. He freely placed at the disposition of the American Expeditionary Forces all his resources as to hospitals, ambulance and train transportation, and medical material. His able advice and valuable assistance was a material factor in the provisions for the care and evacuation of our battle casualties. He rendered services of great consequence to the American Expeditionary Forces.
