The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Judge Advocate General’s Department) Edwin O. Saunders, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Chief of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Provost Marshal General’s Department, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Saunders had charge of and was responsible for the investigation of crime and bringing to trial of criminals. His remarkable skill as an organizer, his untiring efforts, and his sound judgment were mainly responsible for the reduction and prevention of crime in the American Expeditionary Forces, and the recovery of thousands of dollars of Government and private property. His services were of very great value to the American Expeditionary Forces.
