The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Bugler Frank B. Swift (ASN: 1387041), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Chipilly Ridge, France, 10 August 1918. When his company was in a perilous position, due to lack of ammunition and of water, Bugler Swift volunteered to carry a message requesting aid to battalion headquarters, through a zone swept by heavy artillery fire, after two runners had been killed in the attempt. While carrying the message he was severely wounded but continued on his mission, delivered his message, and died on the way back to the dressing station.
