The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Joseph J. Sullivan (ASN: 2261691), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 362d Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Gesnes, France, 29 September 1918. Observing that the left flank of the regimental line was unprotected, Corporal Sullivan voluntarily took out a combat patrol and while so doing encountered three machine guns, which were employing effective enfilade fire. Boldly advancing on this position he silenced the guns.
