The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Ray C. Rolain (ASN: 275031), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Juvigny, France, 31 August 1918. Sergeant Rolain attacked a machine-gun nest single-handed after the four soldiers accompanying him had been wounded. He killed the operator of one gun and captured the remainder of two gun crews and both guns.
