The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Joseph W. Reid (ASN: 1288979), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in Bois-de-la-Grande-Montagne, France, 15 October 1918. When his platoon was held up by machine-gun fire, Corporal Reid fearlessly led them forward and captured machine-guns and prisoners. He later organized and consolidated the position won.
