The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Elvin Lyle Pierson (ASN: 1951636), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 322d Field Artillery, 83d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-la Grande-Montague, France, 16 October 1918. When the telephone communications had been cut off, Corporal Pierson made four trips as a runner through severe artillery barrage and machine-gun fire, maintaining liaison between artillery and infantry.
