The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Nick Monula (ASN: 2337984), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Grand Ballois Farm, France, July 14 – 15, 1918. During a heavy gas and shell bombardment Private Monula repeatedly volunteered and delivered messages over routes other than his own when the runners assigned to those routes had been killed or wounded.
